This Green Protein Flax Smoothie is awesome!
Before I switched to low carb I had fruit smoothies at least once a week during the summer. But mastering low carb forced me to give them up. The great thing about green smoothies is that they’re very easy to convert to low carb. The one I have made most frequently is this green protein smoothie with flax. It’s quick and easy to make, tastes delicious, and did I say it’s easy to make?
To make it even faster, rinse and cut the leafy greens in advance. Then pack them into ziplock bags (I use the quart size) and freeze them. Doing these saves precious time in the morning when you need to take this on the road with you. If you want another grab and go breakfast idea, try my Egg Ham and Cheddar Cottage Cheese Muffins.
This recipe calls for a whole banana, which contains about 24 net carbs (14 of which are fructose sugar). I’ve used this as a meal replacement for breakfast about 45 minutes before exercise and added cinnamon to the recipe. Those two factors prevent the sugar content from causing a problem for me. However, you might want to use only half of the banana, replace the banana with strawberries, or omit the fruit altogether in order to maintain ketosis. Do what works best for your body!
I use Oster’s Blend-N-Go for this drink. Some people don’t like it, but I’ve purchased half a dozen of these and think they’re great. It’s a LOT easier, faster, and cleaner than using the large blender.
Green Protein Flax Smoothie
Ingredients
- 8 oz water
- 1 scoop protein powder
- 2 tbsp ground flax seed
- 1 medium banana
- 2 leaves kale
- 12 leaves spinach
- 1 handful ice cubes
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Rinse kale and spinach leaves.
- Cut or tear all the leaves into about 1 inch pieces and add to the blender.
- Peal banana and add it, as well as the remaining ingredients, to the blender.
- If your blender has a frozen drink setting, use it for this. Otherwise pulse on high for 3 second bursts until the majority of the leaves are chopped. Then blend on high for about 1 minute until well blended.
- Add a handful of ice and blend again for 1 minute until ice is complete blended.
